What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialized massage technique designed to stimulate the natural flow of lymphatic fluid throughout the body. The lymphatic system plays a crucial role in maintaining the body's fluid balance, immune function, and waste removal. Unlike the circulatory system, the lymphatic system doesn't have a pump like the heart, so it relies on muscle contractions and external manipulation, such as MLD, to circulate lymph.
How Manual Lymphatic Drainage Works
During an MLD session, the therapist uses gentle, rhythmic hand movements to encourage the movement of lymphatic fluid. The strokes are typically light and directed towards the lymph nodes. These nodes act as filtration stations, where impurities and waste materials are processed and eliminated from the body.
By stimulating the lymphatic system, MLD helps to reduce swelling, enhance immune function, and promote overall well-being.
